Biography

Stevie Krayer’s publications include three poetry collections and a translation of R M Rilke’s The Book of Hours (Salzburg University Press). With R V Bailey she has co-edited an anthology, A Speaking Silence – Quaker poets of today. She has also co-authored non-fiction Quaker publications including a Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust-funded research report on how to make Quaker meetings more welcoming and inclusive, and a book about the conflict in Palestine/Israel.

Descended from Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and brought up in London’s multiracial East End, she has lived in Wales since 1993 and is a slightly disreputable Quaker. This outsider’s vantage point gives her an empathy with those who are marginalised, which informs her poetry. Philip Gross has commented “Stevie Krayer’s poetry has scope; it goes to difficult places, geographically and politically as well as personally.” Her long-standing concerns include the climate emergency, the ‘hostile environment’ for refugees and opposition to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. She is currently working on a collection exploring the planetary – and individual – tug-of-war between survival and death.
