Biography

I was born and raised in Monmouth, and attended Habderdashers’ Monmouth before studying English and History of Art at Queens’ College, Cambridge. After five years in London as an editor and writer in book and magazine publishing, I moved to France and combined editing ad writing with translation from French. Thirty years on, I translate for leading French museums, art institutions and luxury houses, and have translated and published fifteen novels, including four by best-selling author Antoine Laurain. My research MPhil. on the livres d’artiste of Henri Matisse was awarded by the University of London Institute in Paris in 2013 – a project that led to my critically-acclaimed study MATISSE: THE BOOKS, published by Thames & Hudson/University of Chicago Press in 2021. Translations, writing and editing continue apace as I divide my time between my home town of Monmouth and my family home on the edge of Fontainebleau forest, south of Paris.
