Biography

Horatio Clare’s acclaimed books include Running for the Hills (Somerset Maugham Award), A Single Swallow, Down to the Sea in Ships (Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year), Aubrey and the Terrible Yoot (Branford Boase Award, best debut children’s book), Orison for a Curlew, Icebreaker: A Voyage Far North, The Light in the Dark: A Winter Journal and Something of his Art: Walking to Lubeck with J S Bach. His latest book, Heavy Light: a story of madness, mania and healing, was published by Chatto & Windus in 2021. His next, The Traveller’s Guide to Mental Health – how to make the mental health system work for you, is published by Penguin in 2025. Much in demand as a lecturer and teacher, he works with the Arvon Foundation, Moniack Mohr and Tŷ Newydd. Horatio broadcasts regularly on BBC radio, writes for the Financial Times, the Spectator and various other papers and magazines, and lectures in non-fiction at the University of Manchester.
