The Award

The Wales Book of the Year Award is an annual prize celebrating outstanding literary talent from Wales across many genres and in both English and Welsh.

There are four categories in each language – PoetryFictionCreative Non-fiction and Children & Young People, with one of the four category winners announced as the Overall Winner, and claiming the title Wales Book of the Year. There are twelve awards in total with a collective prize fund of £14,000. In both Welsh and English there are four category winners, one People’s Choice winner and one overall winner.

The Wales Book of the Year Awards play an essential part in Literature Wales’ programme of activity and contributes to its strategic aim of celebrating and representing Wales’ writers, its heritage and rich literary culture. The prize offers an invaluable platform to both emerging and established writers.

The 2023 Wales Book of the Year shortlist was announced on BBC Radio Cymru Wales on the 21 May. Take a look at all the shortlisted books here on the Wales Book of the Year project page.

The Ceremony

For the First time since 2019, we look forward to announcing the 2023 Wales Book of the Year winners in person. The evening will be led by presenter Ffion Dafis, winner of the 2022 Overall Welsh Language Award (Mori, Y Lolfa), and will include a performance by National Poet of Wales, Hanan Issa. The event will be an opportunity to celebrate four category winners in English and Welsh, two main winners, and the winners of Wales Arts Review’s People’s Choice Awards and Golwg360’s Barn y Bobl.

Penarth’s Griffin Books will be selling all the English and Welsh shortlisted books at the venue on the evening, and you may even have the opportunity to ask the writers for their signature.

The ceremony will be bilingual, with Welsh-English translation and BSL interpretation available. The Tramshed is an accessible venue – if you have any accessibility requirements we should be aware of, please contact us in advance.

There is no official car park at the site, but Cardiff Central Station is within a Short walking distance, and many of Cardiff Bus’ routes stop nearby. There is a bus stop across from the Tramshed on Clare Road. Pleaseg et in touch with us in advance if you require a disabled parking space.
