This poem is about Sohni, the heroine of a folk tale from the Indus valley. She comes from a family of potters and swims across the Chenab river to meet her lover every night, using a clay pot. But one fateful night, his jealous sister-in-law exchanges a cooked pot for an uncooked one and Sohni drowns in the river.
Euog, niwlog, yw’r nos
Gwyll beichiog â gobaith,
Awchus, ofnus, yn yr afon,
Heb wybod diwedd dy daith
Awyddus, dy fysedd yn soddi
Yn y clai gwlyb, anfodlon.
