Dear Children of Ukraine was published on 24 August 2023 to note Ukrainian Independence Day.
The poem was composed by Bardd Plant Cymru, Casi Wyn and the pupils of Ysgol Glan Morfa, Abergele. The video was filmed at the school and was played for the first time at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay during a Bardd Plant Cymru event on the 6 July 2023.
The poem has been translated into English by Eleri Richards and UKrainian by Victoria Kamoza (with the support of the Welsh Refugee Council.)
Annwyl blant yr Wcráin,
dyma ein llythyr.
O gymru,
yn belydrau.
Ac yn hafau
gwell i ddod.
Annwyl blant yr Wcráin,
dyma ein geiriau.
Yn sawr ffrwythau,
brawddegau
o gysur.
A chariad.
Lilir dyffryn.
A chlychau glas,
daw eu deffro,
dychwel wna.
Ddyddiau hapusach,
lle bydd mêl yn llifo.
Ar glaw yn peidio.
Annwyl blant yr Wcráin,
yn eich ansicrwydd,
ein gobaith
yw y gwelwn oll ddyddiau.

this is our letter
from wales,
radiating the warmth
and promise
of summers to come.
Dear children of Ukraine,
these are our words
like fragrant watermelons,
sentences
of comfort
and compassion.
The sunflower
and the cornflower
will smile again.
Joyous days
will return,
and sweet dawns will break
after the storm.
Dear children of Ukraine,
in your despondency,
our hope
for all, is a time
where peace will keep
the children of the world
safe in its
golden embrace.
