Speak Back: Welcoming 14 poets and spoken word artists to Tŷ Newydd

On Monday 3 March, 14 writers embark on a free 5-day spoken word residency at Tŷ Newydd writing centre.

Having made its way into the Grammies and The Forward Prizes, Spoken Word is increasingly gaining the recognition it deserves. To celebrate this dynamic and powerful artform, and to support Welsh artists interested in the craft but who are under-represented within the publishing and spoken word scene in Wales, Literature Wales launched a call-out inviting artists to apply for this opportunity.

The poets and spoken word artists who have been selected to attend the retreat are: Emma Katy, Kat Budd, Molara Awen, Nicky Hetherington, Tia-zakura Camilleri, CJ Wagstaff, Regina Beach, , Megan Lloyd, Suzanna Iuppa, Tamia Watson, Katrina Moinet, Gwenhwyfar Ferch Rhys and Frankie Walker.

You can visit the Speak Back page to find out more about the programme’s cohort of writers.

The residency will be tutored by Taylor Edmonds and Kandace Siobhan Walker and will explore themes of identity, the climate emergency and society. Workshops and sessions will focus on written poetry and performance, and we’ll be looking to find inspiration through our environment and in the beautiful surroundings of Tŷ Newydd.

A variety of guest speakers will feature throughout the week including award-winning poet, writer and performer Hollie McNish, various SLAM title winner Vanessa Kisuule, multi-award-winning poet and poetry editor for Seren Books Rhian Edwards and poet, professor, radio presenter of a weekly poetry programme, and Chair of the Royal Society of Literature Daljit Nagra.

The week will culminate in a celebratory evening of performances by the group. Following the course, Literature Wales will continue to support the cohort to reach their ambitions and goals in performance and publishing.
