Food and Fun Creative Workshops
Food and Fun is a programme that provides educational activities and healthy meals to children during the school holidays. It provides good quality breakfasts and lunches, food and nutrition education sessions, structured physical activity and enrichment activities to children living in areas of need.
Creative writing can be beneficial to children’s health and well-being, helping them to explore emotions and thoughts through stories and characters. The children had a rewarding and memorable time playing word games, writing poetry, performing their work and getting to know their local writer.
The workshops provided a sense of achievement, with every child taking home a poem or a story – written individually or as a group. The workshops also encouraged the children to read – and to continue to write – after meeting a ‘real-life’ author!
The five writers involved were:
‘Within the first 5 minutes the children’s attention was captured. They really got involved and loved the session.’ – Litchard Primary School, Bridgend.
‘Some of the children were from Poland, over here on a summer placement. They were engrossed in the poetry readings and despite English not being their first language, they not only wrote poetry, but stood up and recited it at the end. They were remarkable.’ – Alex Wharton, Children’s Laureate Wales.
