Popeth ar y Ddaear Open Call for Young Writers

Open Call-Out for Writers aged 18 -30
Application Deadline: Now Closed

  • A chance to win a prize of £750 each to write material
  • Receive training from the professional spoken word performance practitioner, Vanessa Kisuule
  • A weekend residential visit at Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre from 18 – 20 September this year

In partnership with Cwmni’r Frân Wen and the National Eisteddfod of Wales, we’re looking for writers who are keen to develop new and innovative approaches to engage a young audience by presenting literature in an exciting and contemporary way.

The ability to develop creative writing and standard scripting will be important – but we are mainly looking for individuals with an interest and confidence in creating poetry and perhaps rap from brand new as well as experienced writers.

We’re looking for fresh voices, voices that are currently under-represented in Wales – whether from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, living with disabilities or a long-term illness, or from a low income background. This project will take place through the medium of Welsh, but we welcome learners and second language speakers.

About Popeth ar y Ddaear

The production follows the story of a community forced to move as a result of a catastrophic event. Where are they going? Who wants to go? Looking around, not everyone wants to survive.

What will the finished product be?

  • Elements of popular music curated by music producer Osian Williams (Candelas) putting a full band on stage during performances
  • A team of young actors
  • A script to be recited in the form of poetry, rap or spoken word written by the poet Marged Tudur and the three new selected authors
  • Directed by Nico Dafydd, co-director of the 120960 digital show who will bring it all together with the experienced Frân Wen team
  • A shared work-in-development event as part of the Sgratch Frân Wen scheme in December 2020
  • A production that will be touring Wales – versions of which will be performed in nightclubs or social venues, and the production as a whole will be performed to an audience of hundreds at Maes B, Eisteddfod Llŷn and Eifionydd 2022.
